When we began, I was uncertain about the direction of my career and more importantly, generally dissatisfied with life. Letter from a Stranger
I was on the subway while living in London one day when I noticed a woman who was clearly struggling. I went over to see if she was ok and ended up on the train with her for more than 2 hours. She was a transgender immigrant from Columbia, a drug addict, and a prostitute who had experienced a lifetime of every type of abuse imaginable.
I heard her traumatic story and several months later received this letter...
"I Just wanted to say thank you "stranger" that gave me the gift. I took it as a special thing coming from someone that doesn't even know me but dedicated honest advice. You spend more than 2 hours of your life and I couldn't understand how somebody could really do this. When you were about to leave you said “I will leave you with one thing, and if you only take one thing from our conversation,
this one thing can change your entire life from this moment forward”.
I didn't believe you then if I'm honest. You pointed to how people normally spend so much time in the cruel reality of being so lost in their own thoughts and worries, we won't even appreciate what life is: A GIFT! The job has a Very good salary and enough to live and don't even consider doing what I don't enjoy and something that is not my real nature. I even got my US driver’s license!
Thank you so much for giving me this gift. This means so much to me because you meant it. You had no need to and I was not even thinking you were doing this. But you did and luckily I gave you the chance of believing in me, spending this time of your life to share something that you were not sure was even going to be appreciated as you wanted... exceptions exist and I took it as something special coming from a stranger, knowing that this is something that "normally" wouldn't bother them, because no one really
values such things as very important and meaningful.
But now I see that what was happening inside my head and not in reality like you teach me. I am excited now and can't wait to see the many more gifts life has for me and am just so blessed for this day to meet you.
